Photography/Documentary Timeline

2009

Tun started his photography in 2009.  He studied basic photography from Thi Ha Thein Nyan, a Patron of Myanmar Photographic Society (MPS), at Canon Club.  Thi Ha Thein Nyan is also a founder of Today Photography, Canon Club, Myanmar.

In his earlier days in photography, he shoot landscape and travel photography.

2010

As a beginner luck, one of photos taken during his very first photo-outing to Bagan was awarded the Consolation Prize at the National-level Women's Day Photo Contest. 

Later in 2010, he got more awards in local and international photo contests. 

In March 2010, he studied photo-story making from Christophe Loviny, a Festival Director of Yangon Photo Festival,  at the Institut Francais de Birmanie. 

During a week-long workshop, he produced a photo-essay about Free Funerals Services Society in Yangon under the supervision of Christophe Loviny.

2011

His very first photo-essay Free Funerals for All won Swiss Embassy Prize at the 3rd Edition of Yangon Photo Festival.  Aung San Suu Kyi encouraged award-winning young emerging photographers to do more photo-stories reflecting people lives after private screening award-winning photo-essays at the Institut Francais de Birmanie.

Tun donated his landscape and travel photographs to the Sketching with Light Photo Exhibition at National League for Democracy (NLD) Head Quarter in May 2011.  It is the first photo exhibit at NLD after releasing Aung San Suu Kyi from her house-arrest. All sales proceed of exhibited photographs went to charities.

After reading the call to the Art of Freedom Film Festival, he decided to produce his very first short-film for the film festival which is also  chaired by Aung San Suu Kyi.  He produced his photo-based short film for featuring different perceptions to political prisoners from different groups of people in Myanmar as an indie filmmaker.

2012

His short-film Beyond ... was nominated again at the Art of Freedom Film Festival - 1st Edition.  After festival, he got a chance to study two-week documentary film making workshop at the American Centre. 

He shot another photo-essay about a political prisoner who just released from notorious Insein Prison.  His photo-essay, Reunion, was awarded Jean Loh Prize at the Yangon Photo Festival 2012. 

His award-winning Reunion photo-essay was featured at the Nuits Photographiques - Edition 2012, Paris in June 2012.

With three other award-winning photographers of Yangon Photo Festival, Myanmar Image Makers (MiM) was founded in February 2012.  The purpose of MIM is to promote documentary/street photography and photojournalism among youth photographers.

He shot another film documenting the By-Election campaign of National League for Democracy candidate for Hlegu Township U Phyo Min Thein in March and April 2012.  It is the first election in more than two decades in which NLD contested.

Sharing Photography Knowledge to Orphan Candidates at Canon Club
In May 2012, his award-winning travel and landscape photos were exhibited at the Pictorial of Myanmar Photo Exhibition at Gallery 65.  He won some local prizes for his travel and landscape photography.  At Canon Club, he contributed by sharing his photography knowledge to the participants from Orphan schools in Yangon.

Myanmar Image Makers started its free photography workshop, Introductory Workshop to Documentary Photography, at the Institut Francais de Birmanie in December 2012. 

2013

In conjunction with Yangon Photo Festival - 5th Edition, Myanmar Image Makers conducted another Introductory Workshop to Documentary Photography at the Institut Francais de Birmanie in January 2013.

The storytelling workshop for independent filmmakers
He was awarded the Audience Choice Award for his documentary Spring Hlegu at the Art of Freedom Film and Music Festival which is hold in January 2013.

He produced Rainbow Dream documentary about struggling lives of gay in Myanmar with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.  Rainbow Dream is a documentary about the struggling lives of gays in Myanmar.  Discrimination, unwanted look-downs and undesired penal codes are challenging issues  for gays in Myanmar but they are contributing their best to society.

At the same time, he is documenting the Association François-Xavier Bagnoud's forum theatre activities, Human Drama, with the support of British Council Myanmar.

He participated the storytelling workshop for independent filmmakers conducted by Feature film director, writer, editor and producer Mary Sweeney of USC Film School at the American Center.

2014

Tun, together with his Myanmar Image Makers founders, conducted another Introductory Workshop to Documentary and Street Photography at the Institut Francais de Birmanie in January 2013 in conjunction with 6th Edition of Yangon Photo Festival.
He is a judge of the THABARWA METTA PHOTO CONTEST of the Yangon Photo Festival on the theme « love and protect the envi­ronment » organized by the Yangon Photo Festival and AIR KBZ.

His photo-story
Metta was nominated as the best 15 photo-essays of the year at the 6th Yangon Photo Festival 2014.

With the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom  FNF, Tun continued his documentary work about struggling lives of gays in Myanmar who are facing discrimination, unwanted look-downs and challenging penal codes . 

Screening of Rainbow Dream was made during panel debate section about Censorship in Myanmar at Stockholm, Sweden in February 2014.  It was also screened at the first anniversary donation event of LGBT party organized by YG Event in Myanmar at Flamingo Bar in Yangon.

Rainbow Dream was nominated at the Human Rights Human Dignity International Film Festival 2014.   The film festival is dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi who played an integral role in promoting issues of human rights in Burma/Myanmar. In her honor, the film festival awards ceremony is scheduled on her birthday, 19 June. The film festival is held under the patronage of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Min Ko Naing.

2018

Tun showcases his award-winning Photo-Essays and documentary films at The Secretariat, in conjunction with his 43rd Borthday, on 22nd March 2018. Th e Secretariat was once the seat of power of the British colonial government. Dominated by the overwhelming presence of the former Secretariat buildings, which became the Ministers' office after Independence.

The Guest of Honors of his solo Photo-Doc Screening are Phyo Min Thein - Chief Minister of Yangon Regional Division, Min Ko Naing - 88 Generation Student Leader, Maung Maun Soe - The Mayor of Yangon City and Parliament Members of Yangon Division.
